The Lakers won last nights NBA finals game 101 to 96, and the Lakers are leading the series 2-0. Kobe Bryant had 29 points and 4 rebounds to lead his team to another victory. And after a sloppy game 1 with the score 100-75, things are looking bleak for the Orlando Magic. In game 1 Kobe Bryant had an excellent 40 point game and Pau Gasol had led 2nd in points for the Lakers with 16. The Magic shot about 30% while the lakers shot almost 60%. From the looks of it, the Lakers are looking at a 4 game sweep and hope to crush the Magic.

Lebron’s Amazing Last Second Shot

5. CHRIS PAUL

Chris paul has proven to be a leader for his New Orleans Hornets team. With the two big men David West and Tyson Chandler, he is able to have great chemistry with them with an average of 11 assists per game. And it’s not like all he does is pass, he also averages 22.8 points per game, adding up to a double-double of points and assists per game. Although they didn’t make it very far in the playoffs, Chris Paul is still a strong leader for his team.

4. DWIGHT HOWARD

After defeating the Celtics power house in the playoffs, Dwight Howard and the Magic have proved to be a dominant team in the Eastern Conference. Using brute strength and astounding jumping ability, Dwight Howard has managed to average 13.8 rebounds and 20.6 points and 2.9 blocks per game this season. He averages the most rebounds out of any player in the NBA and still manages to be the Magic’s top scorer.

3. Dwayne Wade

After already winning an NBA championship in 2006, Dwayne Wade has managed to improve his game even more averaging the most points in the NBA per game with 30.2 points. He has proved to be a charismatic and passionate leader, with a strong will to win as many games as he could. After a disappointing season last year, Dwayne Wade and the Heat have managed to bounce back their team into the playoffs, but sadly, they did not make it past the 1st round.

2. LEBRON JAMES

Lebron James is one of my favorite basketball players to watch, and he is the leader of one of the top teams in the NBA. So far Lebron James has lead his team to the Eastern Conference Championship and will probably head to the Finals (hate to break it to you, Magic). He is an all-around player who can play defense, shoot well, and rebound. He has also gotten some of the strongest blocks I’ve seen this year. He definitely deserves this spot.

1. KOBE BRYANT

Ever since Kobe was drafted in 1996 I’ve always enjoyed watching Kobe Bryant play. The reason he deserves this spot is because he does well in every single aspect of basketball. He has an almost perfect shot and can change it in any way he wants. He has also changed his image from “the ball hog on the Lakers” to the leader of the top team in the NBA.

BASKETBALL FOR DUMMIES

First off, I’ll talk about how the game is played. Your primary goal in this sport is to somehow put the basketball through the 10 foot tall hoop. However its not as easy as it sounds, there are many rules. You cant just walk up, stand on a chair, and throw the ball in. That’s not how it works. There are two teams playing at the same time, and there is always a team with the ball. The team with the ball is trying to get the ball into the hoop, while the other team is defending their hoop and trying to prevent it from coming in. The team must move the ball in two different ways, passing to your teammates, or dribbling the ball on the ground while running. However, you may not start dribbling, pick up the ball, and start dribbling again, that is called double dribble. If you pick up the ball after dribbling you must pass it to another teammate or shoot the ball into the hoop. Once you shoot the ball, the other team is allowed to rebound the ball, and get it for themselves, if it misses. Also there is not unlimited space while playing basketball, there are boundary lines, and if you dribble or throw the ball past the boundary lines, the other team gets the ball.

There are many other complicated rules and techniques, but sadly, I’m limited on time and I need to make this brief. Those are the basic rules of basketball, and the rest of the rules you’ll simply learn by playing the game.

THE HISTORY OF BASKETBALL

In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education professor from McGill University of Montreal and instructor at YMCA Training School (today, Springfield college) in Springfield Massachusets, USA, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the long New England winters. After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, and balls had to be retrieved manually after each “basket” or point scored; this proved inefficient, however, so a hole was drilled into the bottom of the basket, allowing the balls to be poked out with a long dowel each time. The peach baskets were used until 1906 when they were finally replaced by metal hoops with backboards. A further change was soon made, so the ball merely passed through, paving the way for the game we know today. A soccer ball was used to shoot goals. Whenever a person got the ball in the basket, his team would gain a point. Whichever team got the most points won the game. The baskets were originally nailed to the mezzanine balcony of the playing court, but this proved impractical when spectators on the balcony began to interfere with shots. The backboard was introduced to prevent this interference; it had the additional effect of allowing rebound shots. Naismith’s handwritten diaries, discovered by his granddaughter in early 2006, indicate that he was nervous about the new game he had invented, which incorporated rules from a children’s game called “Duck on a Rock”, as many had failed before it. Naismith called the new game “Basket Ball”.

Then by the 1950′s basketball was being played in college. And not much later the Basketball Hall of Fame was founded. And not much later after that, a professional league was founded called the NBA. The NBA has grown in popularity ever since, and is now one of the worlds most popular sports.
